Her Story

Bella

THE STORY OF BELLA Bella Whitmore was born in 1898 in a small village on the outskirts of York, England. The daughter of a schoolteacher and a seamstress, she grew up in a modest but loving home. From a young age, Bella was fascinated by music. While other children spent their afternoons playing in the streets, Bella could often be found sitting beside the family's old upright piano, listening as her mother played melodies by composers such as Chopin and Beethoven. As she grew older, her love for music only deepened. Whenever a travelling orchestra or theatre company visited nearby towns, Bella would save every spare penny she could to attend. The grand theatres became her sanctuary. She adored the velvet curtains, the glow of the chandeliers, and the haunting beauty of the music that filled the halls. At the age of twenty-two, Bella married a young railway engineer named Thomas Whitmore. The couple settled in a small brick house and, for a time, lived a happy and peaceful life. Two years later, Bella gave birth to a son named Samuel. Friends and neighbours would later recall that Bella seemed to glow whenever she held him. She sang lullabies to him every night, many of them adapted from the classical pieces she loved so much. But happiness can be fragile. When Samuel was only three years old, he became gravely ill following a severe winter outbreak of influenza. Despite the efforts of local doctors, his condition worsened rapidly. Bella remained at his bedside day and night, refusing to leave him even to eat or sleep. One cold February morning, Samuel passed away in his mother's arms. Those who knew Bella said she was never the same afterward. She rarely spoke Samuel's name again. If anyone asked about her son, she would quietly leave the room or change the subject. The nursery remained untouched for years, preserved exactly as it had been on the day he died. Bella continued attending the theatre and listening to classical music, but many noticed she often seemed distant, as though part of her remained trapped in the past. Over time, strange stories began to surround her. Neighbours claimed they could hear piano music drifting from her home late at night despite there being no piano inside. Others reported seeing Bella standing at the nursery window speaking softly to someone who was not there. In her late twenties, tragedy struck once more. While returning home from an evening performance at a local theatre, Bella was caught in a violent storm. Accounts differ on exactly what happened. Some claimed she slipped while crossing an old stone bridge. Others believed she became disoriented in the darkness and fell into the river below. Her body was recovered the following morning. She was only twenty-eight years old. After her death, several of Bella's belongings were distributed among relatives. One item, however, seemed to carry an unsettling reputation: a porcelain doll that had always sat in the nursery. The doll wore a faded blue dress and had glass eyes that appeared unusually lifelike. Its new owners soon reported odd occurrences. Classical music would sometimes play from radios that were switched off. Theatre tickets would appear in unexpected places around the house. The doll was frequently found facing a different direction than where it had been left. Some owners claimed to hear a woman humming lullabies during the early hours of the morning. Most unsettling of all, those who attempted to ask the doll about a young boy through séances or spirit sessions often described an immediate change in atmosphere. The room would become noticeably colder, and any communication would abruptly cease. Several investigators reported feeling overwhelming sadness, as though they had touched a grief too deep to put into words. To this day, believers claim Bella remains attached to the doll. They describe her as gentle, polite, and drawn to classical music and theatre programmes. Yet there is one subject she refuses to discuss. A little boy named Samuel. Whenever his name is mentioned, the music stops. And Bella falls silent.
