Eleanor Vale
THE STORY OF ELEANOR VALE
Few who study haunted objects speak Eleanor Vale's name lightly.
Unlike many spirits said to linger out of love, grief, or unfinished business, Eleanor is remembered for something darker. Those who claim to have encountered her describe an overwhelming feeling of dread, as though the room itself becomes heavier in her presence.
Eleanor Vale was born in 1856 to the wealthy Vale family, owners of Blackthorn Manor, a vast estate hidden deep within the English countryside. The manor was already old when Eleanor was born. Its stone walls were stained by centuries of rain, and the surrounding woods were so dense that sunlight rarely reached the forest floor.
From childhood, Eleanor was different.
She was often found speaking to empty corners of rooms, giggling at conversations nobody else could hear. Her parents dismissed it as imagination at first. Children invent invisible friends, after all. But as Eleanor grew older, the behaviour did not stop.
Servants whispered that she would stand in hallways in the middle of the night, staring into darkness for hours. Sometimes she appeared to be listening. Other times she seemed to be arguing.
When questioned, Eleanor would calmly explain that she was speaking to "the people in the walls."
The staff became increasingly uneasy around her. Several maids refused to enter her bedroom after claiming they heard multiple voices coming from inside when Eleanor was alone. One groundskeeper resigned after witnessing Eleanor carrying on a conversation with an empty chair in the nursery. According to his account, she paused during the conversation several times as though listening to responses.
As Eleanor entered adulthood, the strange incidents became more disturbing.
Family portraits were found slashed without explanation. Livestock on neighbouring farms were discovered dead under mysterious circumstances. Several servants reported waking during the night to find Eleanor standing beside their beds, silently watching them sleep.
The Vale family attempted to hide her behaviour from the outside world, fearful of scandal. Doctors were summoned from London. Priests were invited to bless the manor. Nothing seemed to help.
By the 1880s, Blackthorn Manor had begun to fall into ruin. The family's fortune dwindled, many servants departed, and entire wings of the estate stood abandoned. Yet Eleanor remained.
Locals occasionally reported seeing her wandering the grounds long after sunset. Her once elegant dresses became worn and stained. Her hair hung loose and unkempt. She often appeared to be speaking animatedly to unseen companions walking beside her.
Children in nearby villages were warned never to approach the estate.
Then came the final weeks.
Witnesses described Eleanor as becoming increasingly withdrawn from the living. She spent most of her time inside the nursery where she had played as a child. The room had remained untouched for decades. Dust covered the furniture, and faded toys sat exactly where they had been left years before.
The only object Eleanor seemed to care about was an old porcelain doll she had owned since childhood.
She carried it everywhere.
One autumn evening in 1887, a passing traveller reported seeing Eleanor wandering through the overgrown gardens. She appeared to be engaged in a heated argument with several invisible figures. The traveller later stated that he could hear Eleanor responding to voices he himself could not hear.
It was the last time she was seen alive.
Three days later, relatives arrived at Blackthorn Manor after concerns were raised about her disappearance. They found the estate silent.
Inside the nursery, Eleanor sat motionless in a rocking chair.
She was dead.
Her body showed no signs of violence.
Her hands remained tightly wrapped around her favourite doll.
According to family records, an expression of absolute terror was frozen upon her face.
The doll was removed from the manor and passed through various owners over the following decades.
That is when the stories truly began.
Owners reported hearing footsteps moving through empty rooms during the night. Children spoke of a woman standing at the foot of their beds. Mirrors occasionally reflected movement where none existed. Several people claimed they heard multiple voices whispering from dark corners whenever the doll was nearby.
More disturbing still were the reports of personality changes among those who spent long periods around the doll. Arguments became frequent. Nightmares intensified. Feelings of anger, paranoia, and hopelessness seemed to emerge without explanation.
Paranormal investigators who attempted communication reported receiving the same message repeatedly.
"They are still here."
When asked who she meant, responses often became hostile or incoherent.
Some believe Eleanor spent her life communicating with spirits no one else could see.
Others believe something else was communicating with her.
Whatever happened within Blackthorn Manor remains unknown.
The estate itself was eventually abandoned and later collapsed into ruin. Locals still avoid the area after dark. Some claim strange voices can be heard drifting through the trees on quiet nights.
As for Eleanor's doll, those who believe the legends warn that it should never be left alone in a room with mirrors.
And if you hear someone speaking softly behind you when nobody is there...
Do not answer.
According to the story, that is exactly how Eleanor first began listening.
